Lifter Jhilli secures silver in Asian Championship

Odisha iron woman Jhilli Dalabehera won the silver medal in the 45 kg category of the Asian Weightlifting Championships at Ningbo in China today. She finished second with a total lift of 162 kg. A product of Odisha Sports Hostel, Jhilli also secured silver each in snatch (71 kg) and Clean & Jerk (91 kg).

Huyen Thi Vijong of Vietnam won the gold medal, ahead of Jhilli, lifting 168kg (76kg snatch, 92kg clean & jerk) in total. The bronze went to Mary Flor Diaz of Philippines with an effort of 158kg.

This was the first major competition for Jhilli Dalabehera in 45 kg weight category. Last year, Jhilli won had medal bronze at the IWF Junior World Weightlifting Championships in the 48kg division.

Earlier Jeremy Lalrinnunga, first Youth Olympic Games medallist competed in 67 kg B group and bettered his performance by 9 kgs and finished with a total of 297 kg (134 kg in Snatch and 163 kg in Clean & Jerk) breaking 15 records in the process. Yes indeed the son of India has created 6 International records - 3 New Youth World records and 3 New Asian Youth records besides 9 National records – 3 in Youth National, 3 in Junior National and 3 in Senior National records.

However, India star and former world champion Saikhom Mirabai Chanu produced her personal best but missed the podium by a whisker, finishing fourth in the 49kg event. But she won the bronze medal in clean & jerk with a lift of 113kg.
